Winter Sports Read Alouds and Activities

It’s almost that time of the year when we teach our kiddos about all things Winter Sports and Winter Olympics.  I love to do read alouds, crafts, writing activities, and much more to teach students about the Winter Games.  If you are looking for some great activity ideas…you are in the right place!  I have compiled a list of activities that are perfect for Winter Sports!

This is a Winter Sports and Winter Olympics themed pack that is perfect for kindergarten, first grade, and second grade classrooms to learn more about winter sports.

The Winter Olympics
The 2018 Winter Olympic Games are the 23rd Winter Olympics.  They will be held from February 9th to February 25th in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Winter Sports and Olympics Read Alouds
Read alouds bring student learning to life.  Students are able to see real world pictures and gain new knowledge through visuals and text.  It is very beneficial for students to be able to see and learn about the various winter sports.  Let’s check out some of my favorite fiction and non-fiction books!

Tacky and the Winter Games by Helen Lester
When I taught first grade, Tacky the Penguin was one of my students' favorite book characters.  This story is about Tacky and his penguin friends as they work hard to get in shape so they can represent Team Nice Icy Land in the winter games. This book has many of the winter sports in it that your students will be learning about such as bobsledding, ski jump, and speed skating.
Extension Activity:  Help your students make a text-to-world connection with his book.  Complete a bubble map with the focus being Olympic Athletes.  Students will give adjectives that describe Olympic athletes such as hardworking, brave, tough, strong, etc.

Snowman Paul at the Winter Olympics by Yossi Lapid
This book is great because your students will learn a valuable lesson about honesty.  Snowman Paul wants to win the Winter Olympics so bad that he cheats and he has a big decision to make about being honest.
Extension Activity:  Students can respond in writing to the question...Why is it important to be honest?  Have students to identify ways that Snowman Paul was honest.

Olympig! by Victoria Jamieson
When this pig is told that he cant compete in the Olympics...he sets out to prove everyone. It's just great practice for the Winter Games! This story is about teamwork and shows that sometimes the underdog can come out on top.
Extension Activity:  Focus on the pig's feelings throughout the book.  Complete a beginning middle end chart focusing on how pig felt throughout the story.  Have students prove their ideas with text evidence.

The Winter Olympics by Larry Brimner
This is an awesome non-fiction read aloud for your students to learn a lot of background knowledge on the winter Olympics and many of the different winter sports that are played.
Extension Activity:  As a class, begin a KWL chart and have students to fill in what they know and want to know.  After reading, have students tell what they learned and record on chart paper.

Ice Hockey and Curling by Robin Johnson
This is another awesome non-fiction read aloud for your students to learn a lot about winter sports.  This book is in a series.  There are other books that focus on the different winter sports.
Extension Activity:  You could use these books with research projects.  Pair your students into teams or groups.  Each group or pair could be responsible for a winter sport.  Students could make powerpoint presentations and present their findings to the class.
